I have a 642 that I want to update to a Pertronix electronic ignition and a new high power coil. Directions say to eliminate the resistor but I can't seem to find one. Ford Engine, Bosch distributor. The current coil shows around 9 volts coming in with the switch on so I assume there has to be one somewhere?

Is it a resistor or a diode that needs to be removed?

On my 742, it was a diode. In my case the diode was near the coil and is in a ceramic block (see attached photo). The new diodes that Bobcat sell do not have the ceramic block and so I’m not sure if yours would look like the ones in the photo or not.

Here is a link to the parts catalog so you can search for the diode:

I searched for “resistor” and nothing came up. But there is a diode.

If the wire is not in the kit (probably is) you'll have to ask for it at a Napa store or others. Napa is just usually better experienced across the board and not just a parts look up stocking company. All locations are not the same. Near Charlotte is one that has gas tank filler hose and you can get the size and length you need. $4 for a piece I needed instantly and the Chevy dealer $40 and wait 3 days. Probably until the Chevy can order it from NAPA and wait for them to deliver it to Chevy Dealer.

I guess we should have looked at the picture of the kit. The large white ceramic block has the resistor in it. Our bad!

The white block is the resistor, It even says it on the box. For points there would be 12 volts to get a hot spark to light it off and then the other side would be wired to reduce the voltage going thru the points while the key is in the run position. It doesn't need all that voltage while running and the points would last longer.

My mistake, just getting old. The diode is in the wire harness as part of the line. The resister is in the ceramic block on top of the coil.
