642 stalls when hot will not restart until cools

I have a 642 with 1.6 ford engine will start and run about 10 minutes then starts to backfire and then stalls, then will not restart until it cools down. I took the fuel shut off out to see if that was it but it still does it. Any help will be appreciated.
 
Might be a bad coil or condenser. Ether of which can cause this kind of problem when they start to go bad.

If OldMachinest says to check the coil or condenser then you must have a standard ignition system with a distributor and rotor, points etc.

If you find nothing wrong in the ignition system then it must be fuel related... probably too much rather than too little because you said it sputtered and backfired before stopping... fuel starvation wouldn't backfire but too much fuel could. Maybe take a look at the air filter... a badly clogged air filter could act just like a choke that never shuts off.

As long as you are in there be sure to check the point gap also, I had one with that engine and similar trouble when the points had closed up. You would think that would give you constant trouble but it didn't till it warmed up.
 
Sounds like it needs a complete tune up. Was suprised to find out the local bobcat dealer did not stock tune up parts. Have not had any luck finding parts at local auto parts either.

I know that there's a post about tune up parts for the Ford 1.6L engines somewhere but I wasn't able to find it. I think that it said the cap, points, condensor and rotor from a 1972 1.6L Ford Pinto worked but I'm going from memory. The Ford Kent 1.6L industrial engine was used in many different machines(skid steers. sweepers, fork lifts etc) and a good auto parts dealer should be able to get the parts.

Look on the outside of the distributor and get the brand and model number then google is your friend. I found tune up parts for mine last year and much cheaper than bobcat who will order them..............for a price. Be sure you put a small dab of grease on the distributor cam when you replace the points. Without it the rubbing block will wear and close up the point adjustment in short order. Originally there was a little felt wiper that held oil but if that has been lost just use the grease. Prestolite or Autolite are the two brands that come to mind..... BICBW.

Thank everyone for the help... A good tune up was in order coil, cap, points, condencer, rotor, plugs and wires. I think that the points were sticking causing my trouble but it is running good now.
