10w30 motor oil or equivilent in the chain case is what Bobcat has been recommending for the last 30 years around here , did they change something or are you in SnowVille , MrPaul !
I guess I meant Bobcat recommends using THEIR hydraulic/hydrostatic fliud.

They will recommend it, but for an older machine like a 642, engine oil will do just fine, no worries about warranty. I' not going to get into the oil debate yet again though :) some use hydraulic oil, some use engine oil, others use bobcat oil. If it works for you, keep using it!
If your chain case is over full, you need to replace the O ring on the drive motors. I have 2 motors off a 743 i have pulled down, i need to get seals and re-assemble them. If you need pictures just yell, i can take some snaps of where this O ring is.
With all that said, the 743 i have now, seems to be different to others i have worked on. It has a seal on the reduction box, so yours *may* have a seal too. If its bad it could be allowing oil to enter the chain case this way as well. I was positive my 731 that i did the seals on didn't have this seal..... Just an O ring.
