I thought I poped a head gasket and tore it down only to find that the gasket was good. The machine will run fine cold but as soon as it gets warm, the motor will miss and puff black smokeit ...shut it off ,let it cool and thecycle starts back over again. Plugs are black and I put new points/condensor and coil in new last fall...the new ignition stuff didn't seem to make much difference and I just limped the machine through the winter. Now I need to get this cleared up and am looking for advice. Thanks, Pete

When you changed the points did you take the point plate out and clean up the mechanical spark weights advance underneath it in the dist? They get all rusted up in there and won't move. I don't think it would cause your problem though, just affect the way it ran all the time. Check the choke plate make sure it opens fully and stays open. Does your motor have a overheat thing on one of the heads with a wire going to it? These make connection to ground at a certain temp and shut the engine off. If it was going bad it could possibly make intermittent ground. Good luck and if you figure it out please let us know. Sounds like the carb bowl may be overfilling and when the engine is cold it would be less of a problem but warm it can't handle the extra gas. Take the bowl off and clean carb and check inlet needle valve. by blowing thru inlet.
