First and foremost I must appologize for my ignorance in the world of skidsteers. I had a 440b given to me. The first thing I did was open the engine hatch and start to inspect. The battery wasn't connected and the solenoid was disconnected and laying in the pan. I attached the solenoid and connected the battery. As soon as I connected the battery, a sudden whining in the engine began. I immediatley went to the cab and set-up to crank the machine. There was no response when I turned the key, however the whining continued. This forum was my first stop for troubleshooting. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

The whining was probably the starter motor spinning but not engaging, take the starter off and clean or replace the drive and replace the solenoid also as the contacts must be welded together in it. If that dont work you can give it to me.

Haha, thanks man. I'm assuming that taking the starter off will be a pain in the butt right? If the starter is running without the ignition engaged, does that indicate a short in the ignition system?

I agree clean and oil then bench test

i changed my starter last year in literally 10 minutes. just 3 bolts. and a few wires.
If it is indeed cranking, it could be a bad ignition switch, short in the wiring, bad relay or stuck starter solenoid. Cleaning the starter is a good place to begin though.
