371 motor

I just piked up a old 371 with 14 hp kohler with a broken rod , no oil in it. I have the head off , but have not looked at crank yet , any way a friend is trying to talk me into getting a new china motor insted of fixing the kohler.what do you think ? I payed700 for it , i would say its in fairly good shape , about 2900 on the clock. 2 new tires. I think I did ok. I am thinking about a total restore. This is the 3 rd one in the shed next to a 632 and 852 . why do I find myself looking at 980 s .when i dont have the bugs out of the 632 and just got the 371
