Hi all, just new here & looking for some assistance please. Bought a 2nd hand 2SDK6 skidsteer, 3800 hrs, was running when I bought it but got it home & can't get it to start. Have serviced the injectors, new insulated washers, fuel pump is working, fuel is getting to the injector pump & up to the each injector, but when I hit the start button it won't fire. Continued cranking only heats the battery leads & flattens the battery. The 2 SDK6 doesn't have glow plugs, but I see on the overhead control panel it has some from of 'glow' indicator which illuminates when I switch on, then goes off after about 10 sec. Any ideas why this thing won't crank over please? Cheers.

Is it puffing smoke while cranking? I wonder if it has a grid heater that heats the air coming into the engine, so glow plugs are not needed.
While cranking, you can give it a quick shot of WD40 into the air cleaner and see it it pops.

Hi Tazza, thanks for your quick reply. It's a direct injection, so I'm told that it doesn't have a grid heater. If there is some form of pre-heating for the fuel, then I can't see it or any wires leading to it. Very nearly had some success today. I re-bled the fuel lines, one by one that connect to the injectors (total of 3 injectors). Then tried the WD40, which didn't help, then tried some Start Ya Bastard, which also didn't help. Flattened the battery again, so I checked the CCA spec for the battery & found it needs at least 600 CCA for a 2SDK6. Swapped out the smaller battery for a heavy duty 4WD one with 760 CCA. The extra crank amps made a big difference. Kicked the motor over & got it running for about 30 secs. It was belching thick black exhaust smoke. After that it wouldn't start again. Kept trying but ran the bigger battery flat too. It's on charge & will give things another try in the morning. The 2SDK6 has an electric fuel pump (lift pump?) & I'm wondering if I should be running that pump or not? Cheers

Some more minor success. Got it started again today, but it cut out after 30 secs or so. Tried to restart but burnt out the starter motor. Also discovered the manual fuel cut-off was faulty, defaulting to 'off' position. Probably would account for why it started today & yesterday & only ran for 30 secs before shutting down. Will have to find a replacement starter motor, then try again. Anyone know where to get a replacement starter motor for a Toyota 2SDK6 with a Yanmar 3T84H engine? Cheers

If it has an electric lift pump, it should be running to give you fuel pressure to the injector pump.
No good about the starter, have you checked ebay? depending on how bad the starter is, a shop may be able to repair it.
The fuel shut off solenoid won't help, i'd try locking it to the run position and seeing if it shuts off again.
Even with the soienoid not working, WD40 or start ya bastard should have gotten it to at least kick......
The smoke could have been because it wasn't firing when you were cranking and could have been excessive fuel sitting in the cylinders. When it got running, it would have been burning the oil off which would have smoked. That's the theory at least.

Tazza, thanks for the feedback. Have sorted the fuel shut off issue, it was a broken cable, so it's good to go when I get the new start motor. Found a starter motor in the USA through Rare Electrical at this link: http://www.rareelectrical.com/p-9240-new-starter-john-deere-tractor-105-1250-950-3t90-yanmar-ty6674-ch19285-ty6716.aspx It's for a Yanmar 3T90 motor but it fits the 3T84H - it carries the same Toyota part number (TOYOTA 28100-42160-71) Should arrive by end of this week or next monday. Agree with your observation of the thick black smoke. I was running the lift pump & because the motor didn't fire then all that thick black smoke would have been burning the oil off. When I get the new starter fitted will try the WD40 / start ya bastard again. I agree with you, it should have helped the motor to pop. Will let you know how things go. Thanks again. Cheers

I hope it is all that was wrong, looking forward to hearing how it goes :)

Tazza, the real problem with my 2SDK6 is a broken diesel heater unit, not the relay, but the actual heater plug which Toyota call a 'thermostat plug'. The positive wire to it has broken off & I can't get it reattached. Toyota tell me it's an obsolete part. So now I'm searching for a new/used thermostat plug for the 3T84H Yanmar. Would you have any leads or know of any forums where I could look for this part? I have an engine diagram of the part in a PDF from Toyota, but I can't see a way on this forum to post it. cheers

Found some data on the thermostat plug. It's a Yanmar 3T84HL-HK, and the part number is 129350-77910 PLUG. Yanmar Australia & Toyota Material Handling both tell me the part was discontinued in 2003 & last part was sold in Australia in 2007. Any assistance in finding someone on the globe who might deal in rare parts would be much appreciated. cheers

Sorry for the late reply, glad you found a lead on the part. The dealer may say it's no longer available, that doesn't mean someone else doesn't have it.
