Hello All, I was hoping someone could help me figure out what is wrong with my bobcat 873. This all started after bringing it to the dealer to fix a safety sensor. they also ended up replacing the alternator much to my dismay. The bill ended up being over $1000 and when I went to pick it up the machine would not start. I would turn the key and it would just click. The mechanic came out and jumped the machine at the starter and it started right up. They took it into the shop and he looked at a few things and ended up saying he wouldn't be able to figure it out until the next day. The next day they called and said they couldn't figure it out but thought it might be main control board (one of the most expensive parts there is). At this point I was fed up. They were suppose to have the machine ready 3 weeks before this and I was starting to get the vibe they were not the most honest. I told them I was done spending money there and I was going to pick the machine up. That caught them off guard and they said I couldn't pick the machine up until later in the afternoon, which got me more suspicious. I get the feeling they did something simply to the machine to sabatage the machine and then try to sell me a $2000 control board. The machine always started perfectly before they got their hands on it. Bottom line. The machine still doesn't start with the key. When I turn it to start, it clicks, but does not engage the starter. I can get out of the cab and take a screw driver and short one of the solenoid to the positive and it starts right up. I have checked all the fuses and relays that are under the cover below the seat. I have disconnected every wire harness that I could find. Cleaned them, dielectric applied and put back together. I have taken all the grounds I could find, cleaned them and refastened. My next thought was that the solenoid was bad on the starter. So I just installed a new starter and it still doesn't work. Does anyone have any other ideas as to what it could be? Your help would be greatly appreciated. Sorry for the long post.

if your unit has a starter relay I would say that is what it needs replacing , it could be added if need be to make things work if it was not engineered with one.

I had to resolve something similar on an 873 I'm rebuilding. I purchased a Service Manual and followed the schematics from the starter back to the key. In your case you have the electronic controls but the process is the same. Work backwards from the starter and through the starter relay wiring until you get to the Cab. There will be an wire that gets energized that operates the coil for the starter relay. See if it has 12V on it when the key is switched. Then do the same at the starter relay on the coil side. Ultimately you are just looking for the 12V signal that tells the starter to turn. If you need some help with the iginition basics just google it and several guys have posted how to follow that.
