I have an older 1845c, I believe it's a 1987my. The alternator charges around 19 volts when the engine is running. I noticed the problem after I cooked one battery, replaced it, and started smelling the new one after running the machine for approx. 10-15 minutes. I removed the voltage regulator (Bosch) and measured the brushes and they both test good (around .7ohms resistance). I've checked all the connections that I can find and they seem good (alt light wiring, engine ground, battery connections, etc). When I remove the light green wire from the alternator the light green wire and the battery measure 13.3 volts with engine running. My questions are-Can I leave this wire unhooked and still have the alternator charge the battery when running? I believe it's only function is to trigger the alt indicator lamp in the instrument cluster. Any other ideas on what to check for the issue? I can't find the supposed diode and/or relay that are connected to this light green wire, or the 30 amp main fuse for the machine. The only fuse I can find is a 20 amp under the operator's seat and it's good. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks,

I'd rather get a new voltage regulator, then i know for sure it will not cook the new battery or something else more expensive.
