First thing I would check is the load capacity of the battery. You can take it into most auto parts stores and they will do the check for free.
That click you are hearing could be the starter solenoid engaging but not enough power to turn the motor. Which if the battery is good the starter solenoid would be my next check. The auto parts store will also check a starter for free.

As another man said have the battery load tested. While you are at it have the started checked as well. If this is an Onan engine, Mine had a crack in the block at the starter mounting location. I thought the same thing. I hear a click as if the battery was dead. Then I charged it up and with that extra power it would crank but and work for days then, Click Click. I had to pull the engine put in a ring gear, New starter and that is when I noticed this crack. I had a pro weld it up. Has worked for years since. Only I could get a cracked mounting bolt hole HA! You just never know with this stuff what it may be. No matter what you find let us know what it was with the cause and outcome it will only help many latter. Good Luck!
