Just a heads up for anyone that cares about the original 1816. I just replaced the engine from the single cylinder 16hp Tecumseh to a vintage 16hp twin Onan. Only issues I ran into was the Tecumseh has a center of crank heighth of 4.25" and the industry standard is 5.25". The shaft diameter on the Tecumseh was 1.1875" and the shaft on the Onan was 1.125". I remedied this by cutting the old motor mount (1.5"x1.5" angle iron) from the top of the gas tank and replacing it with a 10"x11" 1/2 thick steel plate. Drilled and tapped the four bolt holes for the engine. This effectively lowered the new engine by exactly 1". I cut a length of .030" shim stock and wrapped the crankshaft so the pully fit snug. Also custom made a key for the keyway since it needed to be a little taller now but not any wider. I used two 90 degree sweeps of steel conduit that fit nicely over the exhaust stubs and rehung the Onan muffler out the back of the machine. Relocated the rectifier and the fuel pump. The motor looks so good in there and fits so nicely I have had neighbors question whether I really even replaced it!! It really looks like a factory setup now. Just need to paint the machine up.
