Not familiar with that machine, but nobody mentioned the voltage regulator. If the alternator does not have an integrated / built-in voltage regulator, the regulator could be bad and have the same symptoms.

I think you are right about not charging at idle. An alternators ability to make amperage is rpm dependent. Can't speak to your specific machine, but in general and depending on the electrical load (lights on or off, etc.) alternators make enough juice to break even at idle. It is expected the...

I quick test I like to try to check grounds - use a set of jumper cables. Put one cable from the engine block to the negative battery post. If nothing changes, then put the other cable from the chassis to the engine. It will help you figure out if it's an engine ground or a chassis ground problem.

I agree- voltage drop due to the fan motor load when the machineisrunningat idle. If you increase engine rpm and it is less of a drop that will pretty much confirm it.

You mentioned early in the thread that the water pump was making noise. Maybe I missed it but I don't see anywhere that you said you replaced it. Just wondering considering the corrosion in the system. I've seen the vanes on pump impellers corroded off. Perhaps you've lost enough water pump...

I'd also check the electrical ground to the alternator and chassis. Definitely check the alt ground in the harness for green cheese. Maybe add an extra cable from the alternator bracket to the chassis and block to chassis? I'm not familiar with the setup on that machine but poor grounding will...

I had the same problem on my L555 and if I remember correctly; the valve was a special order that was some ridiculous price. I replaced mine with a $5 radiator petcock from the hardware store and haven't had any problems with it.

Where I am it can be ordered as PH - pre-hardened if machining is a concern. You may need to check with your local steel supplier on that one.

If you're going to the trouble of making pins, I'd recommend SAE-4140. It's tough stuff. Considering the effort you're expending it's not that much more than CRS, cost wise, not too hard to machine, and you can case harden it with the an acetylene torch after done with the machining.
