I have a backhoe attachment like the simpler one you are describing that is operated from the skid steer seat. We have used it successfully many times. I had to dig a large hole in the ground to bury a large pile of stumps i needed to dispose of and i was able to do it in just a couple hours...

I think a snow plow blade is the best way to go if you are doing parking lots. Spending a little more to get the hydraulic power angle style is worth it I think. If there is a lot of snow the angle of the blade makes it a little easier to guide the snow where you want it. Check out these glacier...
