yep, I missed that part too. In that case I would suspect the hose that runs from the main valve body to the aux hydraulics valve has broken down internally. Causing a spiral V shaped flap on the inside which is acting like shut off valve and is blocking the flow or that hose is pinched off...

Sounds to me like you know what you are doing. I see no problems with welding up some solid anchor points to make it easier to secure. I would really try to avoid putting any on the loader arm though. Just be sure you are careful when welding on or near the fuel and hydraulic reservoirs.
