check your timing Z - it can ‘cough back’ and run hot. i had an old saab v4 that used to cough - aka backfire and shoot flames back out the carb. Timing had slipped too far off. she would run, but spit back badly.

Those studs are painfully long! I can’t tell for sure if the studs are keeping the manifold proud of going fully against the head. I’d be tempted to cut (saw) them shorter to gain some room. with nuts in place, sawzall / hacksaw blade whatever, then back the nut off to clean up the threads.

i’m going to suggest you find a mechanic to help you out with this. you need someone who at least has a timing light and can use it properly. i’m not sure of your skill level, so that is why i suggest as above.

cool - did you ever verify your wire arrangement? I think, if it were me,I’d want to hear it run first before mucking around putting the EI kit on first. If you change too much and still cant getting running, it makes the diagnosis harder to find out just what is wrong. That distributor can...

A bit of an update - I managed to access the back of the valve thru the engine bay. The cap on the tilt spool refused to come off easily. I was able to release the linkage on the spool and pull it out of the valve body. I’m thinking that the ‘stickage ‘ of the cap is what’s causing my issue...
