I slowly getting things fixed on this 1816. I bought four sets of seal kits and did the one lift cylinder today. As I was sliding rod back into cylinder I noticed kept binding- Pulled it back out only to see the rod has a 'arch' to it. No gouges /grooves, just a gradual arch. I called around and so far no places will straighten it. I heard it can be done though. so.. anybody straightened one at home before? if not.. Anybody know of a good replacement one that will have the same travel, ect?

forgot: If I try to straighten will this 'maybe' work? Use my engine hoist to pull on the flipped curve side of arch and have both hoist legs holding each side down ( using wood to protect surface. I can flex the shaft a little bit just by pushing down while on bench.

My dad and I managed to straighten a ram stick for a small truck crane. We used lumps of wood to hold the bend upwards in a press, then used a piece of wood for the press to push against. It took a bit of fiddling, but we got there in the end.

Thanks Tazza.. I tried my engine hoist- didn't work. Unfortunately I don't have a press. I was looking into them a little and for cost to buy one I'd be better to take it in and have new rod put on. But then again.. Press might come in handy down the road? I got a trucking equipment place said they might try to straighten it. They need to look at it then let me know. I'll take it too them next week.

I may have a pair of unused cylinders in the garage if you're interested. My 1816 suffered a tree-related accident where her little rods were bent almost to the shape of a "J". I bought two different sets, used one pair and forgot to return the other. There's nothing magic about the cylinders. You might have to grind down the rod ends a little, but that's no big deal.

I think you might have a typo? I sent too 'Gmail.com' not sure got to you- please let me know lesgawlik. thanks
If you have a bad enough bend it may have deformed the gland to the point where the seals may still leak. No equipment dealers or hydraulic shops around you? The shop where I worked we regularly straightened rods up to 2 1/2 inches in dia. Use a aluminum block on each side of the bend and another to press with. Use a very good metal straight edge to check. Be careful though, a lot of rods are case hardened and will snap while you are straightening.

thanks- I just dropped it off at a truck equipment dealer. The hydraulic shops here that I talked too all said they don't straighten them but weld new sticks on. That was something considering.. but I hope this place can get it straight.

Good luck with it, some people think that once bent it will bend easier again. It is worth a try though.

Got it back today- looks good (cost: $39).. so put it back together with new seals and see how it works out..That is whenever I get the engine in.

Nice price. Let's hope it works like new.
Thanks Tazza- I thought the price was great too. Worth a try at that. Waiting on a sleeve to adapt the clutch too the Honda engine- then will start going forward with this. Got 4 used implement rims today for the new tires (205x70x15). The set I had were pitted beyond saving. I also have the factory skinny ones if ever switch back.
