Hey everyone. Our 590 with about 800 hours keeps developing leaks on the hydraulic cylinders. It started when we blew a end cap on a tilt. Now all the cylinders the end caps keep coming loose. Anyone seen this or know how to stop it

Leaking around the gland and cylinder or around the rod?
The only reason it would come loose is if it wasn't tightened enough......

Around the gland. Tightened the tilts up and checked the lifts when I replaced the one tilt about200 hours ago. Thought everything was fine till it started leaking and they were about1/2 turn loose

That is wierd. Have you unscrewed the gland to have a look at the o-ring? If it is bleeding hydraulic pressure, I could see it having some unusual effects. Also, have you checked the relief valve pressure? Just split balling...

Just thinking out loud, but gland o-ring should still seal even if the gland is slightly loose, shouldn't it? Maybe the o-ring is too small for the groove. Rule of thumb for static o-ring design is 20% compression in the installed position, so about 1/5 of the diameter of the o- ring should sit proud of the gland groove. Just a thought...

shouldnt that be under warranty? it's a new machine.

Yes warranty. Just trying to figure out why the end cap keeps coming loose. Don't want problems after warranty is over
There really is no reason for the gland to loosen up that much, even vibration shouldn't allow it to move.
The O ring on the glan should hold the pressure in for more than a few turns. The only thing i could think is if the rod was bent, but that wouldn't make sense for it to make it rotate....

Asked my dealer. He sad it is the result of the piston hitting the end cap repeatedly usually the dealer is very reliable. The tilts I might buy it but not the lifts

I find that very hard to believe. If the piston hits the gland when it fully extends, it will just push on it, the same as if you bottom out the cylinder in the opposite direction, you have high pressure fluid pushing on it. Nothing to make it rotate...

That was my thought. Cylinders are getting rebuilt this week so hopefully that eliminates the problem.

Hope the rebuild goes well and fixes the problem. I am not buying the dealer's explanation either. If rebuilding doesn't fix them, I would be asking for new cylinders. If there is a machining problem with the gland(s), rebuilding them won't fix them. Like Tazza said, let us know how this one plays out, in either respect. Cheers!

So the dealer repacked the cylinders. Put the in so far so good. If it ever dries up so we can put some real hours on it. Dealer said they will work past warranty if it continues. They said failures have been more common and are trying to figure out why.

I must hand it to them, at least they admitted to the fact it has happened on more than one occasion, they don't usually admit to flaws like this.
Good to hear they are doing their best to work it out for you though.

That's why we drive 3 hours past 4 other dealers to our dealer
