last week i was using my 643 and i heard this "ping" noise once. i used it every day last week, worked it pretty hard too and it never did it again. then today i unloaded off my trailer and was shuffling my buckets and forks out of the dump truck and i heard it again. the machine seemed fine nothing feels any different. i don't know what it is, maybe the chain? i hope not. it sounded like it came from the right side of the machine (while sitting in the cab)...any ideas? thanks

the machine only has just over 1000 hours, i wouldnt think the axles would be worn but perhaps. how do i check that? thanks a lot
Jack and block the machine up so the tires are off the ground. Push/pull each tire to check for any noticeable end play. Using a long bar pry each tire up looking for movement. If any axle is suspect remove the tire/wheel and do it again with a dial indicator against the axle flange to measure play.
Also check for chain slack by rotating each tire back and forth. They shouldn't rotate much more that 1” or 1-1/2”.

I had a ping in my machine once. It was one of the lift arm pins popping. It was not getting enough grease. I ended up pulling the pin and drilling a couple more grease outlet holes in it and cleaning up the pin the pin bore and putting a new fitting in.

I would add to my post though that my ping noise was almost continuous after a while though. It got more and more often till it was almost every time i lifted the arms.

hmmm. i wonder if that is it. i pressure washed my machine and never regreased after. the last time i greased it i used really cheap grease that ran all over the place. i wonder if there is no grease left on that pin. hmm.

It is easy enough to pull one out clean the bore and pin and put back in and regrease and then do another. I grease it every week. I don't use it more than 8 hour a week. About every two months I get bored and pull the pins out and clean them.

it's done it a couple times since. it seems to be within a few minutes of using it and it never does it again. it doesn't seem to be in the hydraulics or in the drive system. it doesnt do it while moving the arms or while driving. it almost sounds like something expanding and contracting. it's identical every time. a "ping" then about a second later it does it again twice. thats it. any ideas? the wheels seem pretty tight, almost no movement back and forth. chains seem good and no slack.

Maybe a loose or cracked exhaust part.

did cut off a couple nuts and bolts, i thought i accounted for them but its definitely possible. i will have to check tomorrow. keep you updated. thanks.
I had a bolt loosen up on a 743, it did this exact thing. It was being picked up every so often and slung around. Thankfully it did no damage and was sitting on top of the oil cooler when i took the cover off.

Is that the only way to check? It's gonna be damn hard to see the bottom
