new to the forum, i bought an 873 last year and have put only around 5 - 10 hrs on it. i would like to replace the timing belt. the previous owner put a rebuilt engine in and has put around 2800 hours on the rebuild. It is smoking a little when it starts but not too bad, any ideas on why she is starting to smoke. Looking to see if anyone is local in western ny that would assist, and also i have a question on the safety switch,(green Button upper left cab) some times when depressed it wont disengage, i have to lift and lower the safety bar, then the machine will lift/operate, any ideas where to start? I usually can tear down and rebuild anything, but never have worked on one of these, and it looks kind of small area to work on.

The push to operate button should only disengage the hydraulics and brake when the seat bar is down, sounds like it's working as it should.
As for smoke, is it only at startup then goes away? if so, that's normal. Takes time to warm up and burn the fuel fully. It could be a slightly clogged injector too.
If it did it all the time, it could be the turbo.
I assume you changed the air filters?

Where abouts in western ny are you? I'm about 20 mins south of Syracuse. How bad is the smoking? could be a head gasket since these use oil to cool them. 873s are a hell of a machine.

i just changed the air, and fuel filters. in the process of doing the hydraulic, and changing the engine oil. I want to get everything on a schedule. About the safety switch, with the bar down , hit the switch it clicks, but sometimes the machine wont move or lift, i have to lift the bar, lower it and repush the safety lock, then the machine will work, just seemed like somthing was not connecting all the way. I am about half way from rochester to buffalo.

Scokat,
If the timing belt is stretched or jumped a tooth it will smoke.
Hit EPU.com they rent the tools needed and sell the parts. They also give you the Deutz manual for changing and setting timing belt. It's way more in depth then Bobcats.
