I seem to be running into stuff installed in a "hookey" manner on the skidder. The battery is a little larger than the tray, so there is this odd plastic spacer about 1" high. So the battery is only held from sliding around by the top clamp not the sides of the battery tray. The spacer also raises the battery so that the threading of the bolts for the battery clamp works. The battery does not seem to fit in this spacer either, if its suppose to be there. So I am thinking the current battery is too long in length and not tall enough. Also thinking I need to have the battery held in place by the battery tray and the clamp, not just the clamp. I also need to get a boot on the positive battery clamp.

I am looking at page 6-2 of the 843 service manual, and there is no mention of any spacer. Must be something the prior owner used when he got the wrong battery and made it kind of work.

Provided it is clamped down from the top and is staying in one place I would not let it worry me. Some of the older machine used larger batterys then what goes in the newer model and they last for years longer. My NH has a group 31 in it and is still going 11 years now.

I think they went to a smaller battery than what came with the machine which was a group 31. Smaller as in not as tall. The battery really needs to fit in the battery tray to prevent it from moving around. Having it up on a spacer and trying to tighten it enough so it does not slide around is the wrong way to go. I do not want the battery getting loose. Best to do it right and get a group 31.

I have used an elastic strap before to hold my battery in. Never had an issue of it moving. You might be surprised at how much force you need to get it to move around.
With that said, the larger battery will no doubt give you a higher CCA rating, never a bad thing when starting a cold diesel engine.
