463 stalled & will not start

I have a 463 diesel that was working fine until yesterday afternoon when it stalled twice while scraping for a garden. The first time, it stalled & restarted without issue. Minutes later, it stalled again. Ever since, it turns over good but won't start. I know a gas engine just needs air, gas, & spark ...I assume that a diesel needs air, fuel, & glow plug. It has fuel and the air filters are clear, so I'm thinking something with the plugs. I'd like to test the glow plug relay, but don't even know where to start. Any ideas?

If it was running then stopped after being warm, the glow plugs won't be an isssue. Glow plugs are only needed when the engine is cold, it obviously was not cold.
Are you getting any smoke while it cranks?
I would start with your fuel system. Make sure you have fuel, ensure the system is primed. The pickup tubes are known for cracking with age allowing air in so you lose prime. Ensure your fuel shut off solenoid is also working. If its not, it will not be getting any fuel to run.
A few things to check.

Thanks for the reply. Yep, it was plenty warm and I don't get any smoke at all when it cranks now. Now that you mention it, I heard what sounded like air in the fuel bulb when I checked it. I checked the fuel & dismissed it because I have never had to use it before. I'm not 100% sure where the fuel solenoid is, so I'll check the fuel line tomorrow & let you know.

If you think you heard air, i'd suspect the fuel pickup. Give the primer bulb a squeeze and see if it feels firm. It should not be spongy.
Even if you open a fuel line at the injector pump and squeeze the hand primer, see if you get a steady stream of fuel without bubbles.

Yup, it's the fuel pickup line. It broke off just inside the tank. Looks like I'm off to see where I can find a replacement. Looks like it was fairly rigid. Is it just a stiff straight tube?

It's fixed. I used a piece of 3/8" fuel/Emissions tubing from the local parts store & its back up & running. Thanks!

That's all i used too. If the problem comes back, you know a few bucks for a new piece of hose is all it takes.

I too have a 463, and although mine won't stall, it stats perfect on a cold start, but if I turn it off for a bit after it reaches operating temp, it just wants to crank and not start. How do you access the pick up tube?

It should be behind the cab. It should be pretty easy to access, lift the cab and remove the fuel lines that go into the tank.
If it starts from cold like that, i'd have doubts that the pickup tube is your issue though. Being only when it is hot do you have issues...
