811 Backhoe

i have found a 811 backhoe attachment for my 863 for sale but there is one problem with it. The seller states that the hoe will not extend. the curl, swing and stabillizers both work fine, but he states that when trying to extend the hoe it seem to be locked up. he called bobcat and they told him it was likely to be a $140 part inside the ram. He is willing to sell it to me for $500 cheaper if i fix it myself. Any suggestions to what the cause of the problem may be. would it be worth paying an extra 500 for him to fix it? Does this seem like a problem with the controll valve?

You dont give the selling price so its hard to make a decision based on the $500 you state. It could be in the cylinder, the valve, or the linkage. If the cyl is bad it will cost well more than $500. Whole cyl being bad is unlikely. If the valve is bad and has to be replaced that too would be over $500. Linkage could most likely be fixed on the cheap. That model is very strong for its size and should be well suited for your machine. I gave $1500 for mine and it works as it should no repairs necessary to get it going.

seller took the panel off to expose the linkage going into the control valve and says the plunger is not going into the valve body, if that not the actual linkage its self what in the valve could it be?

It could be something as simple as the nut has come off the end of the ram but even that could have caused a lot of damage. Damaged threads, bent ram, even worse a scored bore. Thats probably what's wrong. If the control works at all the boom should move. 1500.00 and you fix it or take him up on the 2800.00 deal. It could easily cost 1000.00.

i have a feeling that ram itself is fine. the seller sent me a video of the thought to be problem and you can see that the plunger that goes into the spool valve is not depressing. it seems to be hung up, hope that paints a better picture.

Given you arent experienced with the systems it may be best to let him fix and demonstrate the unit. Even if it moves fine with no load it may leak or need piston seals in the cylinders. Given the price I would want to see it operate in real world conditions. Other possibility is if its costs more than 5 bills to fix the price will go up or he will decide to keep the unit. I dont know what you intend to do with the hoe but I very rarely use mine maybe once a year. I have a full size hoe and rent a mini x when we need one. $3000 pays alot of rental time on a mimi x and they are way more versitile. Valve could be major or minor and I dont remember if it is one piece or has sections. These unit tend to sit idle for long periods and the spool may be rusted on the valve. Best case with rust is it will leak a little; worst case the whole valve will need replacing.

im glad i picked her up. got it home last night disassemled that portion of the valve body to inspect, found the spring at the bottom of the spool was not collapsing, reassembled her and the unit works flawlessly. 2300 well spent considering you cant get a used one from bobcat here in california for less than 4500 dollars once its all said and done.
