Merry Christmas everybody, I bought an M444 in the summer and have recently had the chance to play around with it. It has a minor hydraulic leak underneath that I'm going to try to fix but I was wondering what the correct hydraulic fluid is. It has a pink coloured fluid in it but it doesn't have the "aroma" of automatic tranny fluid. I don't wanna put the wrong fluid in there... Another issue I have with it is that it burns a bit of oil so I pulled the head off of one of the cylinders. It has a bit of pitting in the cylinder wall so I'd like to hone it out and put some new rings and oversize pistons in it. The engine is a Kohler 24hp engine, not the original Onan engine. Does anybody know how to get the cylinders off the engine without taking the entire engine apart? Looking forward to hearing your thoughts. For now I'm going to use it as is but it will need some attention pretty soon...

None of the Kohler engines that I know of have cylinders that are removable from the block. So the only way to bore to oversize is to do a complete teardown of the engine. If you post the Kohler model number I can upload a service manual for your engine.

Are you sure it's a M444 since the M500 came with a Kohler 24hp K662 engine?

Thanks OldMachinist, When I bought it it was advertised as an M500 but I'm pretty certain it's an M444 as that's what the serial number tag says. The engine is mounted on a steel plate that someone obviously fabricated as none of the edges are a straight line... The Variable speed drive sheave also sticks out the left side quite a ways, there's only about 1/2 inch clearance between the left rear tire and the hydraulic swivel. I don't know the model number of the engine, I'll take a look at it in the morning and let you know. I'll also put a few pictures up for you to enjoy. Thanks, Toby

Oldmachinist, Here's a picture of the engine and the variable speed drive sheave hydraulic swivel. Sorry I don't have better pictures right now and that it took so long, I'll try and get a few more tomorrow. Thanks, Toby
