I got a Onan NHC off marketplace today for $160. I think price was decent considering onan parts. Supposedly runs and has 600 something hours. I tend to believe more hours than that by all the caked on grease. The carb apparently has a issue he thought. I really didn't need it but I heard NHC are not plentiful to be had..Not that cheap anyway. Has decent compression by what I can tell just turning it over. Did I do ok..Or waste $160? I do need a starter on my running mighty mac with onan..but if ever change that I will buy new or rebuilt one since such a pain to get out. Mine misses about every 3rd attempt to crank it over.

when you need a part it will be so nice to have it on hand , But if you have time I would get that engine in running condition and then set it up for long term storage. do not let that questionable starter ruin your ring gear ,that is much more work.

good advise on putting it up..and on ring gear. I also thought if I sell the mighty mac down the road having a spare engine for it is a plus on selling too. He had a video of it running..but not to smooth. Don't think he did anything with it other than new plugs.

You Did Well. If you bought on part in todays world you have a good buy. I may also look to get one for my 1818. Just in case. What you don't know is why it was taken out of the other unit? Or do you?

I don't know why other than he could not get it to run right. None of the electrical has been looked at like points, etc.. so no idea. I saw the kohler he is in process of going in it's place.

I have seen many posts regarding the engines not running properly or dieing out etc. One guy told me that he had issues and did all kinds of things to get it to run Point, and so on. The problem with it was found out. It was a pinched fuel line due to the routing of the hose. He fixed that and it ran well. My 1818 has the onan 18HP Preformer. Runs well but I went to the electric fuel pump due to the constant sludge in the tank that you cannot change and I added a filter for that and it's been fine. The other issue I have is the forward and reverse on the right side not working and I have not gotten to that as yet. During my first days of having this I had starter issues. On these you have to pull the engine and slide it out the rear. You may know all this. I bought a new starter and no change it would catch properly So out the engine came. New ring gear and all that stuff. What I noticed while doing all this was a crack in the casting where the starter bolts to. Who would have thought that and had that welded up given all my skills and master of none. Since then no real issues. But the forward and reverse fails and I hope it's not a hyd motor/pump etc. Hard to find. Sorry for the long note but it haunts me. Just some odd things that have happenend that no one looks for normally. Good luck!!

I had a 1816..note my name..It had a 16hp Tecumseh. I swapped to a Honda 20 and it was as smooth as butter running. Wish would have kept. Good luck with yours.
