We bought a 2009 (or 10) L185 two winters ago with the Fiat (FPT) inline 4 cyl. diesel engine for personal use . The owner's manual covers the L185 and the C185 plus guys on some ag forums mention an LS185. I was wondering what the C and S designates? The manual also mentions Tier 3 but doesn't go into what it consists of. I assume Tier 3 and 4 have to do with emissions and would our 2009 Fiat engine have this, if so, is there any preventative maintenance required? From cruising the tractor forums, guys aren't exactly thrilled with Tier 4 so I'm curious what it is exactly. Service mode is mentioned and I assume it bypasses various safety switches. Don't need to use it, but how is the machine switched to this mode? Last, the manual warns against using ether for starting in severe cold. Are they erroring on the side of caution, or can ether be used with common sense like other diesels? Although the block heater and intake grid work well, this engine can be a bear to start when the temps hit near zero. Many thanks for any answers to the above questions.

The C is for track machines and the L is for wheel machines. The LS series were prior models. You have a tier 3 engine. No additional maintenance required on your part. You do not have a service mode on your loader. Use ether only if you like playing with bombs. Think of an old fashioned heated light filament coming in contact with the explosive ether.

Much appreciated, Mike, thank you.
