recruiting issues. we need new young hungry talent. dealerships are having a hard time getting new young talented young men. most of the folks that are here on this website got serious skills. they been fixing there own stuff for years.. probally got a son or two walking in their footsteps. OPERATOR OR MECANIC? it pays a good wage mechanic that is. they don't need the 40.00$education they already got the basic knowledge, I RECCOMEND HAVE YOURE BOY GIRL WHATEVER WALK IN THE DEALRSHIP ASK FOR THE BRANCH MANGER SHAKE HANDS , LOOK EM THE EYE ASK FOR A JOB.. may start at the bottom. I did first real job after getting out of navy was a jhondeere dealership. steam clean boy yet I was 25 that's man age , but got foot in door. took on the track press. not much fun. got too doing pm<s (planned maint) etc onto repairs. got hired to a case dealership. got real about being a mechanic. within 7 years got my case master tech award felt good. ,. but still young dumb and stupid.. got fired for to much being LATE missing work ETC THESE ARE THINGS YOU DO NOT DO.. .

Your community may be different, but I found out recently why some dealerships have trouble hiring people. I talked to a company (who shall remain nameless, they can afford better lawyers than I can) and found that I was expected to have or buy thousands of dollars in tools, be on call 24/7 every other week, all for about $18/hour. That conversation didn't last long.

Over here, our pay is higher, but we don't get the health benefits you seem to. We have to pay our own health insurance and the “free” one, we pay for with taxes, yet if you don't earn any money, you don't pay tax, yet you get free health cover, go figure.
Generally, tools are provided by the employers, some places even provide you with a tool allowance, so you get a few bucks an hour more to buy tools for the trade with.

I was somewhat surprised by that experience to say the least, since my current employer provides practically everything needed for my work except undergarments and socks. The one before that did as well. Maybe I had unrealistic expectations as a result.

That is how i'd feel a job should be, you are the labor, they provide all the tools required....
I don't feel you had unrealistic expectations, i'd expect the same.

requirements, provide own tools. my shop if you show up with decent box and a basic set of hand tools, you shall be forgiven you will be lent tools, until you figure out what you need, no one expects an auto guy to transition into heavy equip, overnight, that being said my shop you can leave youre wallet on the desk, we trust each other with our lives you can be damm sure expected to be able to be trusted with anything as in money or tools or lunch for that matter. anything other than complete trust does not apply, that includes being on time, not missing days open communication, we all got **** that goes on if open and honest Christ just need boots on deck, this is not a come to work here post this is a come meet the branch manger at any bobcat dealer, look him in the eye shake his hand and have an open discussion about employment,
