went to start my s130 today, totally dead. turning key does nothing. tried jumping. nothing. got a new battery. nothing. checked all fuses. nothing. replaced mega 100 amp fuse by battery. still nothing. the only thing that works is the dome lamp in the cab. i checked all the wiring behind dash everything looks perfect. A few weeks ago i went to start and it did nothing, but i tried again and it worked. this leads me to believe its probably the ignition switch, do you guys agree? figueres i left machine with backhoe on it not in travel position, all stretched out. cant even really tow it. let me know if you have any ideas. thanks so much. tom

Have you tried jumping the starter with a screwdriver to see if you have power there? That would bypass the ignition, the key doesnt need to be turned on. If you have power there, you could possibly, manually open the fuel shutoff solenoid and wire it open to keep it running. Also check some of the relays in the fuse box. I know there is a starter relay, and perhaps a relay that helps power everything up. Move some around and check by putting them in the headlight relay socket to test. Good luck.

yeah i already moved all the relays around. i'm betting on the ignition switch. because like i said a few weeks ago i went to start it was dead, tried it again and it worked. must be on its way out. it couldn't be starter, could it?

Id try jumping the starter by touching the big (positive) terminal with the small one (about a inch behind the large one). That should engage the starter even with the key off. That way if your starter doesnt turn over you found your problem. If it does turn over your ignition theory may be correct.

Since you've replaced the battery and reseated all of the relays, bad connections shouldn't be the issue; I would check the ground cable where it attaches to the chassis if you haven't already.
For the ignition, I would disconnect the positive cable and spray in some contact cleaner (back in the good old days you could go to the tv repair shop and get a can of tuner cleaner, now I think that CRC and others make a brake cleaner / electric motor cleaner) and work the switch repeatedly. If that seems to make it work, a small followup shot of WD to inhibit corrosion should keep it going for quite a while.

thanks for the responses. got the new ignition switch. still nothing. then i tried jumping the starter like mentioned with a screwdriver. it sparks but does not crank. i have ordered a new starter, so hopefully that is the issue. it would appear that is the cause.

Do your gauges power up? Beep when you turn the key to on? Could be a problem with wires behind the relays and fuses. You should be able to push the fuse panel out and get at the back side. Do you have power at the relays? One pin should have power all the time

no, when i turn the key nothing happens. how do you push the panel out? do i have to lift cab?

If you lift the cab and take the cover off the fuse panel you should be able to push it out from the back. Are you getting power through the mega fuse. I had a loader where the small positive cable was bad. Also check the stack of grounds on the negative post. A set of jumper cables from the battery to ground and to the starter or the fuse in the engine bay helps find bad battery cables

Well guys i replaced the starter, still nothing. So now I have replaced the mega fuse (which wasn't blown), ignition switch and starter. I got the starter to turn over. I have power thru mega fuse. Turning the key does nothing at all. I'm nervous that it's the main computer or something. Anyone have any other ideas?? Thanks

Need to check for power to the relays. There is a starter relay and a switch power relay with no power to those nothing will work

have a guy coming to look tomorrow. he asked if the fuses and relays were green and icky, which they are. i think he thinks the problem might be there.

finally got it fixed today. my mechanic found a broken wire in the harness directly above the battery.
I'm glad its finally fixed. That seems like a odd spot for a wire to break. If its in the spot I'm thinking of there is a small group of 6 bundled wires with a protective casing that go into a larger group of wires. Those wires should be pretty much immobile so the chances of a wire breaking is slim at best.
