My primary reason for chains is having good grip on hard pack but I don't really want to run bars on the cross links. For snugging the chains, I have two short chains that run across the wheel sort of parallel to each other. In the "center" of each chain I have a bolt that pulls them together in a rough X shape. It seems to hold the chains pretty tight (though adjustment is necessary periodically). One question is, how tight should the chains be? Tight as hell, a bit loose, or sloppy loose? I've been running them tight, but when the cross links get about 1/2 worn through, I break cross links frequently and am wondering if running them looser would help. Second question: 2-link ladder style, or 4-link ladder? I've been running 2-link for more bite (I think) and less tire wear, but wonder if 4-link will work just as well and maybe fit tighter; less breakage?? Thanks. john</p></blockquote><p></p>
