You could have broken the two key ways in the axle where the sprocket goes on. To me it sounds like you have bad wheel bearings if the axle is flopping around. To get the nut to break loose you may have to use a 3/4" drive breaker bar with a pipe on it. There is no retaining ring or anything like that in there. The castle nut holds everything together.
