Hey Guys, I broke an axle on my 78 thomas skid steer, the spindle nut walked off somehow and in the destruction path of the axle comming out, the axle shaft was destroyed where the inner bearing would sit. I got a qoute from one of the dealships in my home town and just the axle was going to cost me $1750 (CND). I thought this was a little crazy and was wondering if this sounds like the going rate for something like that, and if so, would I be able to get it machined for cheaper? Cheers, Beeman

I'd take it to a machine shop. If you could remove a good one for them to make it match would be a good idea. I have 4 damaged axles on a 453 that i need to work on, i'm just going to re-machine the surfaces in the lathe and install wear rings. The machine shop should be able to weld up the damage then machine it.

The reason the axle cost so much is that they use forged steel and machine them to fit. The are manufactured of hardened steel.

Good to hear! just a little less than the $1,700 odd you mentioned earlier.
Can you supply the serial number of the machine. The above mentioned cost does not sound right. I have a contact at Thomas Equipment that can confirm the price.

If it was just the bearing race surface that got chewed up but the axle is still reasonably straight it could be spray welded and reground back to spec very easily. I have done many such repairs. might be tough to find a shop in your area tho. not many places do it.
Tom.
