I have a 1997 873, and with minimal disturbance the boom locks up. When it locks up on my BICS display the valve light blinks and I need to shut it off restart it and reset my traction lock. My auxillary lights on the right side are also blinking and I brought it to a dealer for a full service and was told my PWM module is shot and if I replace it that will solve the boom locking up also. Does this sound right? I just don't want to spend 500 and some dollars(for my serial # model) because of somebodys guess. Thanks for any help.

It could indeed be the box, but it could be a loose ground too. Especially if you re-start and it clears the errors....

It can be a wire harness problem to. Ask the dealer if the modue does not solve the trouble if it can be returned.

The module did not fix the problem, it seems worse. However the auxillary lights don't blink anymore and the valve light doesn't come on. Where would be a good place to start on the grounds and or wire harnesses?

The grounds are easy to clean and make sure they're tight, then go on to the harness, look for worn spots, spots where the harness must bend, loose terminals at the connectors. I had to soldier in a new connector on my 853 when the aux hyd had this same sort of problem.
You should also be able to put 12 volt power to the bics coil (sometimes these are on the main control valve with the 2 coils for your 3rd valve aux hyd, and sometimes they are in there own little aluminum box with a coil on the side) and make the lift and tilt unlock. Be careful here as some coils were less then 12volts and you would need to ad a resistors to drop the voltage down to what the coil is rated for.
I take it the park brake is functioning correctly? as it should release at the same time as the boom unlocks (unless the redundant park pedal between your feet is activated)
Also check your relays, there should be 4 (not 100% certain on your model) find out whick ones powers the coil to unlock the boom.

I really appreciate the feedback and am taking your advice skidsteer ca. and Tazza. I do not have a lot of time to work on this at the moment, but have taken the grounds off and cleaned them, and checked most of the harnesses. I will follow through with your list but now my battery is dead and it seemed to lose it's charge the day after I put the new module in. Would this problem make somewhere more likely than another place to start?

I would have that battery checked out completely before going any further, there may be a intermittent problem inside it causing low voltage at times. jerry

Try another battery it you have one.
Does there seem to be any draws or a spark while disconecting the battery with everything off? Is the battery quite old?
If you had another battery to throw in it I'd do that next.
