New owner/operator, no prior equipment experience. I have a 2015 T770 with hi-flo and forestry package, operating an FAE drum mulcher.
Yesterday the Engine Coolant Temperature light came on on the left side instrument panel. The temperature gauge was working, and was within its normal range, about the bottom 1/3 or 1/4 of the gauge. The indicator moved a little based upon varying load. I stopped mulching and inspected the situation. There was plenty of air coming out of the side vents. I get out and clean off the grille pretty frequently, so I am used to the temperature coming out of the vents, and the air temperature was not hotter than usual.
I shut the engine down and checked coolant level. I then raised the oil cooler and checked for debris on the radiator. There was a little, and I blew it off. Then using compressed air I blew out the fins on the oil cooler, ac evaporator, and the radiator. A little dust came out, but not much. I keep it pretty well blown out. I shut down for the day. There were no codes displayed on the left instrument panel, and there were no codes displayed on the right enhanced instrument panel, and no codes in history.
This morning as soon as I turned the start switch the Engine Coolant Temp light illuminated and stayed lit when the other bulbs went out after the self-test. The temp gauge on the left panel was reading stone cold. The unit was not even running yet, and had sat overnight, so it is not hot or even warm yet.
Then I started the engine and did some light driving with the loader to warm the system up. The engine coolant temp on the left panel, and the hydrostatic and aux hydraulic temps on the right panel all warmed up normally. They didn't warm up any faster, and they didn't get any warmer than usual. The Engine Temperature gauge continues to work perfectly normally. I mulched for about 2 hours. The light never went out, the gauge stayed in the range it normally does, the oil temps didn't go up, and everything ran normally.
The description in the manual says "Engine Coolant Temperature high or sensor error". So I am suspicious of it being a sensor error. But the sensor is a simple coolant temp sensor, and the engine coolant temp gauge is acting perfectly normal. I would think that if there was a sensor problem that the engine coolant temp gauge would also be wonked out.
Looking for other experiences with this issue and sensor.
