I knew that the planteary type would be out of my price range to build. and I wasn't opposed to constructing a gear reduction, but I looked at the models that don't have either, just because they would be simple and cheaper to build although they might not work as well. I then pulled the numbers off a few different types and went and looked them up. Thats about it, Then I found a motor that was even slower than those. I take it that the Flow on the Aux for your unit is 7 gpm?
Yes, 7 gpm.
I too was going to build an auger drive, but I was thinking chain reduction (not my first choice, but budget was pushing me in that direction). Tazza sent me some pictures of his for reference.
I was into the calculations and was starting to pick out parts when I found the bevel drive auger attachement for $1500 complete, brand new, from a local equipment dealer.
That sold me. They delivered it and threw in a new, double flight, 9" auger for that price, too. I have since picked up a 6" auger, and I built up a 12" out of an old mangled one that my dad's neighbour was throwing out.

Well, I haven't given up on the Earth auger, just got a little side tracked, While trying to run the auger noticed the govenor not kicking in to rev up the engine so I was running it manually till I slipped an pressed my hand against the exhaust, which hurt. So I decided to try to revitalize the motor. Pulled the engine, did a valve job on it and just got it back in yesterday. Trying to get the timing dialed in right now. I'll keep ya posted.

I do have some pictures of the auger and a video of it in action but just waiting for it to upload from my phone to my laptop. In the mean time I managed to Dig 70 post holes this weekend, but in the process the motor started to act weird. At first I thought it was the fuel pump but, No Dice, Pressure is good, It starts like a champ and runs awesome till it gets hot then it starts to miss and act like the choke is stuck on, I have checked the points twice and have adjusted them although they were within spec. I almost thought it made a difference but after running it for a little bit, same ole thing. I checked the compression and since the Valve job the compression is pretty much 90 to 95 in each cylinder. Considering before the one cylinder had 60, it just runs a lot stronger. While I had the plugs out I took a wire brush to them because they were covered with soot. Starting to wonder if the Coil is dying on this ole thing.... Other than that I'm out of ideas on the motor...

You could be on to something with the coil. If the coil is breaking down, heat will only make it worse.

Have a read of this: http://www.skidsteerforum.com/DesktopDefault.aspx?tabid=54&frmView=ShowPost&PostID=2445
Finally got some images put up online, Heres the pic of the machine, I'm gonna repait it when I get a chance, I should of done it when I had the motor out but it was actually really easy to pull other than the fact that the Tombstome on the back of this thing predates Hinges,

2nd and final attempt at the Auger Drive Mount/ hanger

It works out pretty good. Had a friend machine it out of some old parts that we found at the local salvage yard, Didn't cost a thing other than the 12oz friends that didn't make it.
I wish I would of taken more pictures from start to finish, would of made a better write up.

That's pretty cool. I love seeing these older machines being put to work. Nicely done on the auger too. A lathe is a handy thing too. I wouldn't be without mine.

Old school cool! I like the red and blue and the swoopy lines.
Hey Joer, I bought a Gehl 2500 last month and am just finishing up a repower. I put in a Kohler CH730 25hp V twin. Replaced the chains and did a few mods to it. I raised the cage 4 inches and lengthened the control sticks 6" because I am very tall. I have been having troubles with the hydraulics and I think it is the hydraulic pump, so i just ordered a new pump. I ordered a 15 GPM pump from www.surpluscenter.com Ive purchased a lot of stuff from them this summer in my bucket truck rebuild and now this skid loader project. I just found a Mighty Mac I am going to buy for parts. It is complete except for the engine and chain idler / adjustment spindles. $400. Where are you located at? Jason from Joice, IA
