Ive had a few older NH L555 and L553. Ide like to own something that could be just hand control's. What would be the benefits of a LX565 over a L555? what about the newer LS170? I appreciate your thoughts. Scott

Not familiar with the older models but a lx565 and a Ls170 are the same machine except the 170 has a turbocharger on the same engine, boosting it 10 hp. The L or LX 565 compare dirrectly to a LS 160 and the L and LX 665 are the same as a LS 170.
I also believe the main difference between a "L" and a "LX" of the same model # was the LX was factory fitted with auxilary hydraulics plumbed out on the boom with quick couplers and the L models had the 3rd spool in the hydraulic valve for the Aux hydraulics, but no plumbing down the boom, and were not fitted with the linkage to control the 3rd spool.
I'm not exactly sure when NH began offering joystick controls, but believe it just the last few years. They may of had kits to convert the foot pedal machines over to hand controls but not that I have ever seen.

I looked at both machines hard but I decided on the LX 565 for a couple reasons. First of which is the 555 is getting to be an old machine, no way around that. It's a good one, but age is starting to creep up on it, and a lot of the parts are going to be unobtainium or very expensive. I also didn't like that the hydraulics and drive share a common reservoir in the 555. Too much opportunity to make metal in the oil. Second, the boom is much stouter on the LX, but you still need to be wary of cracks around the rear pivot points. The cab also felt larger and more comfortable. The LS was nice, but too spendy for me for a part-time farm machine. If I want to trade up later, I think the LX will hold value better than the L machine too. Thought the 555 has Kubota power, the engine in the LX seems just as stout and bulletprooof as the Kubota's I've owned. YMMV
