8000 lbs, minus weight of the trailer, 2000 for a good built one, that leaves 6000 lbs of skid steer sweetness (give or take), maybe a Boobcrap 753/S130, Cat 216/226?

Small machines are going to weigh around 2000 pounds empty. Those are the ones that are only 36" wide and lift around 500 pounds. Typical machines with a few extras are going to be pushing it for a 1/2 ton. Be sure to get 4 wheel brakes on the trailer and the proper controller and learn how to use it. Also getting the load balanced on the trailer will be critical.

Depends on the size of the skidsteer and trailer, I have a Bobcat 773 that weighs around 6000-6300, but I have a grapple bucket that weighs about 1000 on it's own so say 7300 plus another 2500-3500# for a trailer, I think that would be a bit much for a 1/2 ton, maybe a very occasional use but not for everyday use. I have a 1 ton diesel truck and I know it's back there for sure, like someone else mentioned be sure to have the trailer brakes it's a neccesity for safe traveling. I guess overall I would say no, a 3/4 truck would be minium for longevity and saftey.
