Hello all you Bobcatters, I am getting ready to purchase a used Bobcat. I want to use it to finish a new house (rolling scaffold, landscaping and also snow removal). I looked at a 743B diesel that was very nice for the age, I hesitated and it was gone. The dealer called and said he had a 642B coming in and thought it was a good unit for the money ($6500.00) It is a gas 89 model year. I would like to know your opinions on this machine as far as engine reliability, pump, drive, etc. I realize that it is used, but, I want a machine that was not born with a multitude of issues. Any insite would be appreciated. Thanks, Randy

This machine uses the same pump and motors from memory as the 743 does. They are VERY reliable. The engine i believe is a ford petrol, i'm not sure how good they are but i haven't heard anything bad about them.
The main difference between the 743 and 642 is the 743 can lift more and has more power than the 642 does. You simply won't be able to do as much work as fast. With that said, you can get in tighter spaces with the 642 as its a slightly smaller machine.
Both machines will be around the same vintage.

I believe the engine is a Mitsubishi. I have searched the forum and found nothing bad about the Mit. motor. Hopefully the machine is as clean as he tells me. Thanks for responding. I am excited about getting a new toy. The dealer also told me it used the same frame and what not of the 743. Thanks again, Randy Also, a pretty good group of guys on here.

I didn't know it used the same frame...
Ok, the HP is about the same as the 743, 32 hp vs 36hp on the 743. It runs a 4G32 engine.
Rated at 1000lb vs 1300lb on the 743
So its pretty close to the 743.
Whatever machine you do get you will be thrilled with it!
