M 500 ????

hi first post here, what i have is a melroe model 500 skid steer i got for free from a guy at work. the origanal 662 had a crack in the block, but he gave me a 582 motor that i put in there. i just got it runing but were the belt drive come's off the motor and go's up to the drive for the main shaft one side has a decent hydro leak. ive read a few post regarding how the M-600 cover has two adajustments nuts for the clutchs. now for my questions, when i go to remove the two big adjustment nuts do i need to count the turns or mark them. second how much oil will be in there, behind the cover. lastly is there a bearing and seal kit in there, i work for a major cat dealler as a welder and never worked on something like these before. other than the leak it a strong runing machine, need some paint and some TLC but hey it was free, thanks jason.

I don't know much about these machines but we do have a few experts on these style machines, i'm sure they will pop their noses in shortly to tell you what needs to be done. The leak is most likely just a seal, but if you do one you may want to do the lot.

ya this is my fear, i dont want to open up a can of worms. i mean it works and with snow coming in a few months i would hate to tie it up. hopefully somone here can shine some light on the subject. i dont mind opening up the side cover but im not sure how the adjustment nuts work. i turn and drives fine so i dont want to screw up the clutchs, thanks jason.

try to find a service manual for it they are worth every penny.........good luck and welcome to the forum....Jeff

thanks jeef my next stop is to hit the bobcat dealer monday before i go to work. they should have some old manuals, if its any thing like the CAT dealer ( milton cat ) i work for they should have extra's floating around. anyone else have any other insight, thanks for the help jason.

which Milton do you work at? I am at the one in Scarborough often for my "real" job if they don't have it at bobcat try eBay there are other places to get them online as well.... Jeff

milford, the corporate office, been there for 4 years now. how are you guys holding out up there we had a 7 man lay off last week. im now 28th from the bottom of the list ( eek ), but i figure if it gets that bad then we all in trouble, later jason.

Jason, did you get a manual yet? The two big nuts you see on the side of the machine are covers for the clutch adjusting nuts which are under them. They are castellated and have a cotter pin locking them. You can take the outer big ones off and remove the side cover and take a look around in there without affecting anything. If it is the driven sheave shaft that is leaking it could take some time to repair the seal. If it is not leaking a lot just leave it till you have time. Check the oil level at the two 1/8 pipe fittings toward the front on the left side chaincase.There is one for high and one for low level. The two chain cases are connected so the level is the same for both. Maybe it is just over full. Don't start it with the side cover off unless you want a oil bath. I did that.

we are slow but steady must be doing something right...the boss can still afford to have you guys fixing the equipment oh yeah and pay us......Jeff

jerry thank you for the info this is what i was looking for to the "T". i went to down to the local bocat dealler and they made a bunch of copys for me. nothing showed the clutch nuts, so i was stil in limbo thrying to figure them out, but what you said jerry make perfect snece now. jeff some of the rental fleet is coming back in, we picked up close to 40 machines today alone so it was'nt a bad day. so there will be plenty of "return from rents" to do and hopfully alot of rent dammage, thanks for the info jerry and im sure there be more qeustions for this machine, jason.

well i removed the side cover to day and saw the chain drive, all i can say is wow. it looks like it was brand new, all the chains are fine and the theres not a drop of rust. now to the leak, i looked at the bearing re-tainer plate and noticed the flat seal the sits up against the wall of chain drive there was a piece of the gasket missing or not there. i left the retainer plate alone but i cleaned the top of retainer plate with brake clean and applyed some blue gasket sealer on it. i built it up with a couple coats or layer's of sealer, let it set-up and took it out for a test run. its not leaking now, so all i think it was is it was missing some gasket allowing the oil to plash down onto the shaft behind the gasket seal. i ran it for about a 1/2 hour and nothing, so i guess this is solved ( crossing fingers ). now my other two qeustion. were is the hydro oil fill, is it part of the drive train oil. if so what grade of oil does it take because it is low. the other is, is there two gas tanks one on eather side, one i know for sure because the fuel pump runs from it and that where if ill it. the other smells like gas but im not sure because the guy before me might of put gas in thinking it was a gas tank but really is a hydro tank ( YIKE's ). i know i know get a service manual, i will but in the mean time i kinda need to know. thanks for the help, jason.

Jason, keep in mind that I have never worked on a 500. The manual I had for the 610 listed the 500 also so I think they are the same machine just different horsepower motors. Good you stopped the leak easy. the hydraulic fill is on the left side of machine [I think} on top of chain case toward the rear it is a pipe fitting with a breather cap on it. Bobcat has there own oil but I ran auto transmission fluid in mine and it worked good. If you put too heavy a oil in it you will probably have trouble with clutch drag in the cold weather. With atf if you have a leak in the winter it looks like a blood trail. Most any hydraulic fluid should work as it has just a pump for the cylinders. The gas tanks are interconnected also although there is seperate drain plug on the bottom for each side for both oil and gas. The oil in the chain case is the hydraulic oil also and on the 610 the filter is under the machine about 4-5 inches in diameter and a foot long but not too expensive.

jerry agin this is the info i needed to here and im glad the gas tanks are not hydro tanks like i thought one could be. i think your right about the 610 and 500 being very close to the same except for the motors, well mines differnt anyways because i used a kohler 582 not the original 662. i have plenty of 10W hydro oil so i will use this and so far so good on the leak, im keeping my fingers crossed. agin thanks for the info now im on the hunt for a manual, jason.
