i'v got an 843, yr model 1983 with the perkins 4.154 engine in it ...well actually it's the third engine. the clock stopped working about 10 or 15 yrs ago with about 6000 hrs on it so there is no telling how many hrs on the machine total. i traded the machine to my brother about 2 months ago and he let someone use it and.... they ran it hot and cracked the head. does any body know where to get a head for this machine, that 4.154 was in a lot of applacations in the 80's but they discontinued it and parts are hard to find.

Not good....
You may need to check the bores for roundness too, with excessive heat they can go egg shape.
Depending on the crack, they can be repaired by cylinder head shops, have you asked around?

engine number two had cracks that were pinned and welded but it finnally gave up the ghost. i was looking for a head when i found a guy that had two used engines out of marine gen sets. he wouldn't sell me a head but he said i could have an engine for 650$. at the time i had found a bare head in florida for 1100$ so i thought 650 was a deal. when i got to his shop he tried to sell me both of the engines for 1000$total but......nooooo.. iwas too smart for that..lol....wish i had that spare now. the gen sets were set to run at 1500 rpms so i had to have the pump recalibrated to 2500 rpm .so these engines were just idleing along for thier previous life ,they had heat exchangers on the gen sets so no salt water in the water jacket and they wern't that old.. the salt air eats up the generator part of the gen set way faster than the engine. my brother is taking the head down to grand junction tomorrow to find out if they can pin and weld it.... i feel bad about unloading my 843 on him just before it takes a dump so i 'm trying to do what i can to help out. lesson ..don't lend your machine to someone who wont take care of it like thier own...

That sounded like a bargain! shame you didn't snap them up, but its not a thing you expect to need.
I know how you feel, but remember its not your fault. When you sold it, it was working just fine. The person he loaned it to should be paying for it. Thats why i never loan my machine, you don't know what they will do. The last person that ran my machine when i wasn't home killed my park brake. I vowed never again! so no one uses my machines but me, unless i'm around i will let others use it under supervision.
Hopefully its just the head, heat can warp your cylinders too.
Let us know how it works out!
