Hey guys, I posted this question in the Gehl forum, but had to response. I figured this forum may get some more traffic. I looking at buying a used 1988 Gehl 3310 skid steer for light work around my place. Seems like it's in pretty good condition. I was wondering if anyone has any experience with these units? Is there anything that I need to look for in particular on this machine? Thanks Chris

Hi Chris,
I'm afraid I'm not going to be much help to you, but thought I'd at least bump this up for you. I've got no experience with Gehl machines (little enough with Bobcat for that matter)

but one thing I would look into is dealer support. Is there one close by? Do they have a decent parts dept.? Maybe drop by and B.S. with them for a while, as they're likely not selling this particular machine they might not push the "product" as hard as they would if it was on their lot and may give you a more honest opinion.
If there is no dealer close by, I would be more inclined to pass this one by, unless it's very cheap and has the appearance of being in very good condition. Lift the cab and open all access panels and check to see how clean it is, accumulated muck can hold back any leaks from reaching the ground hiding potentially expensive repairs. Ask for service records or reciepts for parts and repairs if available.
If you decide to go for it, I'm kind of thinking this might make you our resident Gehl expert,

so hopefully you'll stick around and keep us all informed on how it goes.

Thanks guys. Mr. Jimi, the yellow and white 3310 was the one I was looking at. It seemed like a fairly nice unit. It had newer tires. It came into the dealer with a broken rod, which as I understand it is common on the Onan 20 HP engines. The dealership replaced the rod. I made an offer for less (2800), but they didn't want to move on the price. I just didn't want to pay more, I live in IA so there is a 7% sales tax and then it would be about $200 in diesel fuel to go and get it. I figured I might be able to find one locally for sale by a private individual for an equivalent price. I really don't know if the price is good or not. On the one hand its a 1988, which is fairly new for that price, however it is only a 20 HP machine. I was a little concerned about it being underpowered with the 54" bucket. I see other machines with 54" buckets and they are 27+ hp. Thanks Chris

Chris, you would be suprised what a gallon of yellow and 2 quarts of white and one quart of black would do for that machine!! Like new and very easy sale after your ready to move up, and you get to use machine for free. Food for thought

Mr. Jimi, I was thinking the same thing about the appearance, although I was going to return it to its orginal Gehl colors with the red body, grey ROPS, etc. I think it would really look sharp. One big project I had for the skid steer was I am looking at putting up a pole building. The building would be on a slight hill, so there would be a significant about of dirt work that would need to be done. Either digging out the hill or building up the site and then landscaping when I was done. If I put teeth on the bucket, how well do you think this machine (54" bucket & 20 hp) would do for digging and moving dirt? Would it stall out if I have a bucket full of dirt and am also driving through soft dirt? I don't have a lot of experience with these units. I'd hate to buy something so underpowerd for the task that it's unusable. Any insight on this would be appreciated. Thanks Chris

Chris, your bucket size is matched to your machine, I don't think you will have any problems at all. I bought a Case 1845C ( pictures in gallery )with full intentions of using it and learning how to operate it and throw some paint on it and later move up, right now it does unreal stuff, its a powerhouse. I love it. and I can't afford another one yet? Shh
