I should add, that I see the timing mark plate but there is no corresponding mark on the crank pulley. Am I missing something or what is the next best way?
I had my head rebuilt and am reinstalling everything. I am about to set the valve clearance on it. I have to set #1 cylinder to TDC. #1 as I understand it is the closest to the fan, correct? So I will pull the glow plugs and turn clockwise at the crank nut.... but how do I tell where I am I am...

No lumps of carbon just looks like they had a light coating of carbon. The 3 injectors were cone like I would guess that the spray ended 1" from the end of the injector. #4 was nearly straight and a stream and maybe 1 1/4" or so. The firing is the same every revolution. The unit only has 1200...
