Starter went out on the (1988) 843. Bought OEM replacement from bobcat dealer. The new starter is an "upgrade" from the original (no longer available). The new starter does not come with a flange mounting shim so I used the shim off the old starter, but it set the pinion gear back to far so it wouldn't engage the flywheel. Then I trying mounting it with no shim at all, which set it up too close to the flywheel. The parts counter is confused because there is no part number for a new shim to space it at just the right distance from the flywheel. What am I missing here? Is there another way to manually shim the starter/ make a shim? It needs to be roughly half the thickness of the old one ( which is about 5/8" thick)

Year(1988) means nothing, need machine serial number to look and see if there's any other shims.
I'm sure the dealer asked you for the serial number.

Serial. 5037-m-27378
Bobcat parts look up for your serial number shows a different spacer, bolts and a brace to install the new style starter.

Right. We ordered that thinking the spacer was for the front mounting flange, but it's not. It's a spacer for a bolt that mounts the new style rear support bracket to the block. All it is is a metal bushing. The dealership emailed the corporate parts dept. head honchos and they basically said "I dunno, just get the old starter rebuilt". So I found a place that will do it for half the cost of the new starter. Guess I should have done that in the first place. How frustrating.

I guess they don't care to keep records up to date on older models...
I assume they gave you a full refund? if so, that seems good of them, but still your time and running around to try and do the right thing....
