I have a 2010 NH L175 skidloader that needs an engine overhaul (diesel) Haven't pulled it yet or anything but the dealer is recommending a $7400 (plus labor) re-man to stick in. Wondering if anyone out there would know how to get a hold of a decent used engine or economic parts for us to overhaul ourselves. Are there other options to get a re-man besides going through the NH dealer?

As far as a repower goes, a Kubota V2203 is in the right HP / displacement range. There are lots of these engines arounnd that have been pulled from old reefers.

You can find them on ebay for around $1500.00

The issue is that NH use their own engines, if the one in it now is a Kubota, sure go get a runner and out it in.
Depending on how good you are, you may be able to make one fit though.

What is the reason you are needing a rebuild? As long as the block and head isnt cracked, a rebuild is the cheapest solution if you are willing to turn the wrenches. You can even call your local machine shop and see if they can qoute you a price on a rebuild. At a minimum, see if they will do the machine work on it( Bore, grind crank, valve job, ect...) Some of the diesels used cylinder liners so that would eliminate the need for boring.
The reason the dealer is suggesting a reman, is because that is what they do. Shops seldom rebuild engines anymore as it is very time consuming and costly. Faster for them to just drop in a reman and go.
I suggest you belly up to the NH parts counter and start pricing the parts for a rebuild and go from there. It may not need everything, but no way to know if its still in the machine.

Doing a quick search, it appears your NH may use a Shibaura N844lt engine. There are several rebuild kits listed on ebay in the $800 range. Not sure on the qaulity, but it lets you know there are other options available. There are several diesel engine shops around that could maybe suggest a better kit, and what to avoid. Dont be afraid to call on an ad for a reman engine and ask if they will sell you a kit to to do it yourself.

Thanks for the responses. It is a N844-T. Does anyone know where I could get a tech manual to help tear this apart? Specifically we need help pulling the crank out, torque specs, etc. So far, it appears that it has just spun one rod bearing. I hope the crank is serviceable .

Try posting a question on the NH page. There is a user there, mike10, that may be able to help.
