Okay, all you mechanics, I'm rebuilding the hydraulic cylinder on my Bobcat brand grapple bucket. I've got it all apart and now trying to put in new pieces. My question is, how do you get the seal back into the groove in the inside middle area. Old one came out easily with an ice pick, and the new one is the same diameter, but it seems like it's much larger when I try to install it. Any ideas appreciated!

If you're asking about the rod seal that goes inside the gland then this is the tool you use.

You can buy one from McMaster Carr

That is the ideal tool, i use cir-clip pliers as i don't have the correct tool, the ones with nice round pins to not damage the seal. Grab the seal with it and twist to make it into a W shape, then push this into the gland and slide it into place.
The seals take a lot more abuse than you may think.

Thanks, guys, I knew that there had to be a better way than using my fingers and a dowel. I'll probably just get the tool since there are a lot of chances to use it. I'll try Tazza's method first.
