I guess I'll introduce myself first since I'm new her although I have found a ton of great info on this forums for quite some time I have a bobcat 742 1984 ford 1.6 it started having stalling issues found it to be the starter from other threads here thank you. When I changed the fuel pump I removed the shutoff solenoid from the line as the wire had broke off one terminal so I soldered it and put it back on it started up woo hoo not so fast about 2 minutes later it died then nothing just a click when turning ignition suspected starter had someone give the starter a whack while turning key nothing took out the solenoid still nothing turned the key and held it and smoke coming from the negative terminal on the battery any info ideas brainstorming will be much appreciated also when it ran the power had decreased greatly before it died thanks Brian

Well if you had smoke from the cable, you need to give it a good clean as heat is due to high resistance.
Engine issues could be timing, points, vacuum advance. All should be checked and adjusted.

Update I replaced starter battery and battery cables then narrowed the engine troubles that have been haunting me down to the solenoid on the back of the carb it was not functioning correctly. What I did was remove it and cut the pin that blocks the fuel to the bowl I do have a manual shut off valve in the line for saftey. Reinstalled solenoid and it runs tops now just wanted to post this incase anyone is having the same problem thanks.

Thanks for the update. I had the same engine in a previous machine, it served me well. A bobcat mechanic told me if the engine ever starts running rough, check the points for gap first. The points on that engine are fussy and he was right. The gap is .025
