743B restoration help

Hey everyone, I'm new to your forum as of today. I just purchased a 743B in real bad shape. I have restored cars my whole life and love to work on them in my spare time. With that said I would love to restore this broken down beat up 743B to look and run like new. So I just got it home yesterday and I'm excited to get started. The problem is that I have no prior experience with any heavy equipment or diesel engines. So where do I start? I will list a few things I see wrong below and maybe you guys can help me get started. This should be fun but I will have many questions for this forum's members. No battery. No key. The guy told me the motor was frozen because of water going down the exhaust pipe. No bucket. No quick attachment thingy. The cage is bent like the top got pushed down but not too bad. One side is sticking out a little. Question #1 : Should I remove the glow plugs and add trans fluid to the cylinders to see if I can get it to free up like I used to do to old frozen car engines or is there another way. I think I can do this while I search for a battery and new ignition switch. Thanks in advanced for the help

Removing the plugs and ATF may help, but being a diesel, i'd like to pull the head and have a look at what condition it is in. If there is any rust in the top of the head, if you crank it, it will hit the piston. There isn't much space between the top of the head and the piston. You are looking at maybe 1-2mm, it's not much at all.
You would be amazed what you can straighten out on the cage, i have one that fell off a truck, it was very badly bent. It's not perfect now, but it's a lot better than it was.

You can but the engine comes out easy and a bit over a hour and the ujoints need checking I would replace them for $100 and a good cleaning
Also lift it up and turn the tires back and forth and in and out will tell you alot.....,in and out no play back and forth inch .....inch and half

The head will come off with the engine in place, but as antfarmer said, pulling the engine really is not hard to do. Gives you more access to clean and inspect other parts.

I'm going to search how to remove the engine now. I will try to pull it before this weekend. This will be a good starting point. Thanks for the advise guys. I will try to get some pictures too. This should be fun...

Two rad hoses one air cleaner hose one fuel line one wire to the glow plugs one wire to the starter soliniod four bolts from the exaust maifold both batt cables four engine mount bolts and slide it out about a six pack

That pretty well sums it up.
4 engine mounts, with the rest removed use a chain on the two lifting points on the head and lift it and slide it back and out.
Get a helper to line up the drive coupler when you need to put it back in.
I think it took me two hours to do on my own to remove replace the u-joints and have it back in and running again. I got very lucky being able to get it done on my own though.

I got everything loose. I don't know which bolts to loosen to get the motor out. Is it the 4 bolts in the floor? Do I leave the plates attached to the motor?

Yes the four on the bottom leave the others alone you will find the bolt heads under the engine under the cat

Yep, the plates stay in place, they keep things mostly lined up for when you put it back into place.
Update: I got the motor out. It was pretty easy. Just found out that the starter was stuck. The gear was engaged against the flywheel. Pulled the starter. Motor still wont turn. I'm going to pull the glow plugs and use PB Blaster in the cylinders. It did sit for a few years from what I was told. The bad news is that I think I tore my rotator cuff while pulling the motor. The pain is killing me so it may be a few days until I'm back in action.

Boy I can REALY feel for you lol just got my surgery for mine last friday and still trying to (sleep) in a recliner not much luck..........did you drain the oil and see what was in there?

I have not drained the oil yet. But I did pull glow plug #1 and it looked great. Now for more bad news, I pulled glow plug #2 and rusty water started pouring out. So I'm thinking it's time to pull the head and see what kind of damage is in the cylinders. With the starter being stuck I thought I was home free. Oh well, On to the next mission. I will start taking pictures to make it more interesting. Going to the Doctor tomorrow but gonna try some wrenching tonight. lol
