I recently purchased a Thomas 25GT that had been fitted with a horizontal Shaft Loncin 2V78 22HP Chinese copy V Twin. Everything runs fine but the charging circuit only puts out about 2amps. The engine has a transitorized magneto through a rectifier/regulator for the 12vdc charging, which does not have enough grunt as I need about 10amps. I've done all the electrical meter checks and everything is correct. The original engine was a Kohler 25HP Command Pro which put out 15amps. The Kohler stator has 18 radial coils where-as the Loncin has only one, so I think there in lies the problem. I thought they may do an uprated stator kit but being a Chinese copy I can't get any info on this engine. I wonder which engine they copied!!! I have thought about chasing up the measurements for a Kohler stator kit to see if there is any chance it would fit!! Has anyone had a similar problem that they have overcome? Any info appreciated as it's getting annoying having to re-charge the battery after each use!!

Others have cheated and hooked up an alternator to it, do you have space to hook one up somehow?

I looked at that but the hydraulic pump is direct coupled to the back of the engine and there is no crankshaft viewable, I'm not even sure how the pump is connected to the crank, it must be a slip fit on a keyway and then bolts direct to the engine.

How about a cheap solar panel

That really does limit your options then.... There really is nowhere else i cano think of to pull power from.
I wonder why the charging circuit is so small on that engine, even rid on mower engines have more output than that......

Your spot on, there is no other method to get a descent charge output to run everything and charge the battery! I don't know why they have such a small charge circuit, the stator on this engine is only one single coil, compared to a Kohler that has 18!! I think my only option is to try and see if I can get a 15/25 amp stator assembly off a similar engine that will fit this one, I was hoping that someone may have already done this :) If I can't get that sorted, I will probably get a solar panel battery charger on the shed roof and just leave it on charge when not using it and just hope the battery holds up long enough to get a days work done! If anyone has Kohler stator models #2808502-S or #237878-S lying around, I would be interested in the measurements (ID & OD). Many thanks for your feedback!!

I think I have answered my own question, I've been Googling and have worked out that the Loncin 2v78 is a copy of the Honda GX620, it looks like Honda do a 20amp stator part for the GX620 so i will research that option to see if it will actually fit.

That is quite a few less coils, being a chinese copy, it seems they were trying to save money so they make it so there is just enough power to run the engine, no more.
Hopefully the GX620 stator will fit, you just need to get hold on one at a respectable price too.

The Chinese copy really well, so no mistakes, the base GX620 has only a 3 amp coil and that's the one they obviously copied, you can get a 10amp & 20amp stator config for them, but assume they were in different versions!!

My Launtop LT620 engine in my Bobcat 440b is also a copy of the Honda GX620. It also had the 3A charging circuit. The original Kohler Magnum was rated at 25A.
I looked at buying the parts from Honda to do the 20A upgrade. The best prices I saw were on eBay. Buying from Honda was going to be expensive - somewhere in the neighbourhood of $400.
In the end, I cheated and put a 55A Denso belt-driven alternator on. Cost me about $100 all in. I know this does not look to be an option for you, but for what it is worth...
Cheers - SR

Thanks for the info SR. Tazza had highlighted the external alternator option but unfortunately I don't have access to the PTO shaft as it's all enclosed by the hydraulic pump. The Honda 20amp stator upgrade parts must have reduced in price, it is around $100 and I was just going to get a $20, 3 wire Reg/Rectifier that suits a similar engine, all off ebay, so I think I will proceed with that. Details for your info: .......... http://www.ebay.com/itm/HONDA-GENUINE-Charge-Coil-31630-ZJ1-802-GX610-GX620-GX670-GXV610-GXV620-/231290594847?pt=US_Outdoor_Power_Equipment&hash=item35d9fe661f ......... http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-ONAN-REGULATOR-RECTIFIER-JOHN-DEERE-318-420-/360785256519?pt=Motors_ATV_Parts_Accessories&hash=item54007a2047&vxp=mtr .......... Out of interest sake, how many hours do you have on your chonda, mine is brand new and goes like a train, but assume the quality for longevity may be lacking somewhat compared to a Kohler or similar known brand donk.

Glad to hear you found a better deal than me. My machine never had an hour meter, so I would have to guess. I repowered it almost 5 years ago, so I likely have 300-400 hours on it. Runs great, way more torque than the original Kohler. I run synthetic 10w40 in it, change it twice a year. The whole story of the repower can be found in this section of the forum, if you haven't already seen it. Cheers - SR
