T190 engine miss on 3 and 4 cylinder, track tension cyl and more

I got this 3750hr t190 in for a customer. He bought it as a basket case. Someone put a head on it, But never bothered to clean the very dirty rad. He took the turbo off and had me put on a new one it did not need imo, before deciding its beyond him. Only running on 2 cylinders. 3 and 4 never get over 140 degrees on the exhaust manifold. Checked compression today and we are spread between 520 and 400. The 400 is one of the cylinders that is hitting. I swapped the injectors end for end and two centers with each other and the problem stayed the same. I'm thinking tomorrow I going to try to connect them too the lines and see if I have any fuel delivery on 3 and 4. The track tension cylinder is leaking grease around the ram. Assuming these are re-packable? I also want to dump the hub oil and check for trash and check the case drain flow and filters for trash. Then hopefully we can decide if this is a parts machine or has some hope of being fixed. Tracks are 75% but mismatched, sprocket worn, center idlers are tight, not sure on the end ones yet. Hydraulics seem tight, boom stays up, minor leak underneath. Rear door don't latch. Cosmetics are rough. Aside from the obvious I wish I knew if it had any other recent work. For you long time members yes I'm still kicking, just been tied up in other ventures these days and don't have much free time to hang out. Ken

I think you are on the right track, checking that you are actually getting fuel to the injectors, rare for them to not be though.
That is quite a spread on compression, may need to pull the head again or at the very least, check valve clearance. The difference was only meant to be 10%? or was it 20%? either way, closer than you have now.

We had a similar situation on a 763. Head was bad as was the block between2&3 PS3&4. Any blow by in the pan. That was ultimately what made us look at the block

Blowby does not seem too bad and is reasonably smooth, not like one cylinder is real bad. I have no idea if the head they put on was rebuilt. I hooked the injectors up to the lines and they are completely worn out. So we are going to try a set to see if it will start running on all 4 again. Yes the spread is supposed to be only 10% When you head went there was no compression? or a mild leak between cylinders? How about into the cooling system?

There is always that chance. If you didn't do the head, i'd pull it and inspect it for cracks or blown gasket.
Some backyard mechanics may not even clean the surface before slapping a new head on, causing it to leak.

When ours went the spread was more than10% don't remember how much but it wasn't totally dead. Bad injectors will raise havoc and could explain the temp difference
 
Top
