Could anyone help me with the operation of the intake heaters in a NH L785 with intake heaters. What I want to know is how these are supposed to operate. I understand that they run off a solenoid but currently power only goes to them under starting operation (while the starter is being turned over). This makes no sense to me. I would assume that they should operate the same as a glow plug in a pickup. IE. turn the key on and wait for 10 or so seconds until they heat up, then turn the engine over. I would also assume that they should run for a while until the engine warms up. Could someone please educate me on how these should operate? and if they are operating incorrectly - what my problem might be? Thanks in advance.

Your's is operating correctly. I have in the past added a push button switch to energize the solenoid so I could preheat before cranking the engine.

I might figure out a way to set up a relay to give me 30 seconds of continuous operation and a light that goes on for 10 seconds when the key goes on. About the actual Thermostart plug - our local NH dealer wants $288 each and this thing has 2 of them in it. (I'm doing this research for for my father, and away from the L785) so, I'm wondering if something like this is the right plug: http://www.ebay.ca/itm/PERKINS-HEATER-PLUG-GENUINE-PRESTOLITE-12V-2666108-/281130251548?pt=UK_BOI_FarmingEquipment_RL&hash=item4174ab351c&_uhb=1

If your switch has a acc position to the left could you wire that to the solenoid so you could preheat ? My pickup has a grid heater and 15 -20 seconds is plenty in the winter of preheat.

The actual intake heater definitely doesn't look like what I posted in the eBay link. this one is much different. Looks like New Holland is my only option unless anyone has a better idea? Side note though - I have a 98 Chevrolet 6.5L diesel that is a treat to start in the winter (sarcastically speaking) and I would consider installing these into my truck but does anyone know if these burn out if they're on for too long - if so, what is "too long" Thanks again.
