Hi guys, sorry this may get a bit wordy because I've been on another forum waiting to get my password fixed on here. I bought a 1996 bobcat 863. I was told it's hi-flow...but no idea how to tell. I'm new to this equipment. It was smoking a bit. Got told it was injectors...3 out of 4 were dripping, so I rebuilt all 4. Still smoking. Only ran about 10 minutes since new injectors. Took it to bobcat of Charleston and got told he didn't know much about the machine and immediately wanted to tear off my heads and replace the gaskets...no, I could do that...I want it diagnosed correctly. It is very tough to start for the first time of the day...not sure how to use the glowplug? It has one single in the intake I believe, not sure. Is it button activated, or key to on and wait? The lh panel is missing one button and has a toggle switch I have no idea what it does. I'd really like to figure out how to get the glow plug activated, or if it's bad...I'll replace it when I find out where it is. I need the smoking to quit. It's sitting at superior diesel right now and they said the crankcase has pressure in it and it needs a complete rebuild. That sucks. Just praying someone has an old idea that may not be a rebuild. It's a 4 cylinder Duetz engine...machine serial is 514412616. Not sure but I think engine is the BF4M1011 turbo model. If any of you can get me a parts illustration...or help me figure out what the switches are and maybe something else to check....PLEASE, help. I'll post a few pics.....if someone can tell me how?

The guy I bought it from said he used it and it started smoking. Used it a bit longer and then quit. Said he was told injectors probably, but I replaced them. I haven't done a compression test yet, I should. I have a compression tester for gas engines...will it hold up to the pressure of a diesel or is it different? The glow plugs aren't there...I'm pretty sure it has the one intake plug. photo bobcat3.jpg If you can zoom in enough maybe you can see it?

There will be four glow plugs should be by the injectors pull them and put power to them they should glow at least a 1/4 " all the way to the tip
I would put some marvel mystrey oil in the holes once I pulled the glow plugs and let it sit for a day or so then crank it before putting the plugs in to get it out but might just be worn out

If I find the glow plugs...I'll do it...but I'm pretty sure they aren't there. Maybe in the injector ports?

Never played with that engine try letting it run for a while see if it stops smoking and see if it is blowing out the dipstick hole or the vent tube

What vent tube are you talking about? I do like the marvel mystery oil idea...never used that stuff....does it work magic?

Will need a better tester
I pick it up monday...in the meantime...if anyone has a parts breakdown on my tractor...so I know exactly what every switch, or plug may be...that would be great! Also...I can't type in this box unless I hit preview post...then back...then I have a blinking cursor...weird! But yea, if you have an 863 with same switches...please tell me what I'm missing or what they do...thanks a lot guys.

pretty sure glow plugs in that era machine you turn the key on one click and a light comes on i think. that would explain hard start without glow plugs. what color smoke? white? dark? i think white is unburned fuel and dark would be oil.
I'll check the glow plugs Monday when I pick it up. Tuesday I'm off. I'll be going wild fixing this thing. Hope you all are on ! It's white smoke

You will need a diesel tester and to disconnect the fuel shut off solenoid before spinning it over.
The smoke could be the turbo too.
Ensure the air filter is clean.
If it has glow plugs, ensure you are getting power to them too, a bad relay will prevent them working. Even without glow plugs, that engine should start, they are direct injection.
Start with the compression test, see what the figures give you.

Did you clean the air filter housing and put a new filter in? Most of the guys here will have seen your posts on the other forum. The one that said they found a 1/4 inch of dirt in the air filter housing was one of the most telling. Dust will kill a engine quick. The compression test should show if it has.
I saw a set of compression adapters recently that were fairly cheap, I think it was on Harbor freight.
You may have to use compatibility view to get the posts to work right, I have to.
