The fuel tank needs to be removed. This means either jacking the machine up and securely blocking it under the frame or driving it over a pit where you can work from below. An empty fuel tank will make the job easier. Do not try to remove the drain plug on the bottom of the tank, you will probably cause a leak. Either runt the tank empty or if it has an electric fuel pump, pump it out with that and a longer hose to reach a container. .................... On the top of the fuel tank you will need to loosen the clamp on the filler neck, remove the hose going to the engine, remove the cross hose on the right side, you can leave the left side connected and feed it down with the tank. Remove the wires from the fuel sender. Lower the tank a couple of inches and then remove the return line on the right top side of the tank. The tank can now be removed completely................. Once the tank is removed you will see a square access plate on the side of the chain case. Remove the plate..............Get yourself a length of 5/16" all thread and cut four pieces 6" long. Weld a not on one end or use a double nut, taper the other end slightly. Screw these four bolts into the holes which held the plate. Screw into the chain case until the bolts contact the gear. Once the bolts contact the gear put screw them in farther until there is pressure against the gear to hold it in place when you remove the axle. Remove the axle nut and remove axle from machine...................While you are there, do both sides.
